Tumbai herb – for Skin Eruptions & Worm infestation

This plant belongs to Lamiaceae family, it’s Latin name is Leucas aspera. It is a small erect, much branched annual herb grows up to 60 cm in height, flowers white, in dense axillary whorls. Fruits nut lets, brown and smooth.

Ayurvedic properties: 

  • Plant pacifies vitiated kapha, pitta
  • Rasa: Katu, Lavana
  • Guna: Guru, Rooksha, Teekshna
  • Virya: Ushna

Preparations

  • The samoolam of this plant is crushed and boiled with water.
  • the steam is used for inhalation in conditions like nasal congestion, cough, cold, fever, headache etc.
  • For unconsciousness due to the toxicity of snake bite, the juice of leaves is used as nasal drops.
  • Also the leaves are given internally for best results.
  • For sinusitis, the flower juice is used for nasiyam.
  • For continuous headache, juice of flower is used for nasiyam.
  • Also the juice of the flowers, is applied on the burns, boils, scalds will sooth the wound and heal soon.
  • For intestinal worms in children, the juice of flowers and leaves are given internally or a decoction is prepared of it.

The plant is known by various names in different parts of India.

In Sanskrit it is known as Dronapushpi, Chitra patrika, phalepushpa, karabhapriya, and Drona.
It is called halkusha in Bengali, Guldora in Punjabi, kulnnphul in Gujarati, Goma madhupati in Hindi, Kubo in Sindhi, Bhutamari in Oriya, Bahuphul in Marathi, Thumbai in Tamil, Thumbe in Kannada, Thummi in Telugu and Thumba in Malayalam.
